Playbar – Video Controls for Instagram: privacy policy
Prepared 5 November 2026 from the Playbar source, version 1.2.0. Contact: verbalike@gmail.com.
What Playbar does
Playbar adds a control bar to videos on www.instagram.com: play and pause, a seek line with the current time, volume, playback speed, picture-in-picture and fullscreen. It has no Playbar account, no developer server, no analytics, no advertising and no remote code.
Where it runs
The content script runs only on pages under https://www.instagram.com/. Playbar requests a single Chrome permission, storage. It has no host permissions beyond that page match and no background service worker. It does not read your Instagram messages, account details, cookies or browsing history.
What is stored, and where
Settings are kept in chrome.storage.sync: whether the bars are on, the default playback speed, the arrow-key skip length and whether to remember the volume. Chrome syncs them with your browser profile if you use Chrome sync; Playbar itself sends them nowhere.
The volume level and mute state you chose are kept in chrome.storage.local on this device, and only while "Remember volume" is on. Turning it off deletes the saved level. A single flag in chrome.storage.local records that you pressed "Leave a review", so that menu row is not shown again.
Nothing else is stored. Video playback state stays in the page's memory and is gone when you close the tab.
Network and sharing
Playbar makes no network requests. No data leaves your device through Playbar, and nothing is sold or shared with anyone. Instagram itself continues to receive whatever it normally receives when you use its website; Playbar does not add to it.
The "Leave a review" row in the ⋮ menu opens Playbar's Chrome Web Store review page in a new tab. That is an ordinary visit to the Chrome Web Store, handled under Google's own policies; Playbar sends nothing with it.
Your control and deletion
Turn the bars off from the toolbar popup at any time. Turn off "Remember volume" to delete the saved volume. Removing Playbar deletes everything it stored locally; synced settings are removed with the extension's sync storage.
This website
Visiting this policy page is separate from using Playbar. ExtensionTower hosts the page, and its hosting provider handles the normal web request. Playbar has no welcome page or uninstall survey and sends no install or uninstall events.
Other
Use of information received from Chrome extension APIs follows the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Playbar is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Instagram or Meta. Questions: verbalike@gmail.com. Changes to how Playbar handles data will come with an updated policy and date.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will appear on this page with a new date.
